You may have heard of the pelvic floor, with the rise of social media it is being more openly discussed. But, what is it exactly? And, what is its purpose? The pelvic floor is a group of muscles, ligaments, and supportive tissue called fascia. Together they provided support, stability, storage (urine and stool control) and sexual function. Let’s dive deeper into each category.
Support- the pelvic floor supports the organs. Some imagine the pelvic floor like a bowl or a trampoline, in which all organs sit. When there is a disconnect between strength of the pelvic floor and pressure above we can have conditions like pelvic organ prolapse. We like to view it as part of the foundation of the body- the core canister working in conjunction with the diagram, deep abdominals, and low back muscles for managing pressure on the organs as well as our next S- Stability…
Stability- the pelvic floor is an integral part of a system of core stability- the core canister. Picture a soda can or cylinder the top is the diaphragm (breathing muscle), the sides are the deep abdominals and deep back muscles, and lastly the bottom is the pelvic floor. Together they work to protect the organs, provide support to the spine and pelvis, and manage pressure throughout the system.
Storage- the pelvic floor assists in storing urine in the bladder and stool in the rectum. This also includes its role in elimination (peeing and pooping)- it’s role is to relax as we evacuate. There are many factors involved in managing a full bladder or bowel including pelvic floor strength, coordination, diet, inflammation, and lifestyle.
Sexual Function- optimal blood flow, muscle strength, and coordination are important for sexual function and satisfaction. When things go awry we can have pain and dysfunction. Pelvic floor muscles that contract and relax well improve orgasm and erections. For peak function overall fitness, stress management, mental and metabolic health are highly important as well.
